The NLP approach
NLP offers a range of techniques that can be used to direct your behaviours and beliefs, to help you achieve goals and dreams. When coupled with coaching, action learning and a congruent approach it becomes a powerfu technology…. Because of this effectiveness, NLP is also utilised in many areas of Business, Health, Education and Sport.
Neuro Linguistic Programming, to give it its full title – is a branch of Psychology which studies precisely how we run different behaviours and responses. It is also about how we learn everything, from bad habits to excellent performance. Any ability to do something is made up of a series of skills, woven together by an individual in a specific sequence, which they then run. NLP provides an understanding of these skill patterns, and has developed profound techniques for individuals to change these behaviours – if they want to.
NLP has been described as a body of ideas and a way of thinking, a toolbox of techniques for adjusting to modern life. Its content is the study of subjective experience…. but what is that? Subjective experiences are things we define for ourselves, like being healthy or being ill, being happy or being sad, being successful or being a failure. Such definitions have a powerful effect on performance.
This is enhanced by studying the effect of Beliefs on an individual. Beliefs are the principles around which we act. These drive our behaviour and capabilities. And because of this they have a powerful self fulfilling effect. For example, whether you say “you can” or “you can’t” – you’re right! Our most deeply held beliefs create our Identity, our sense of self. It is thus by understanding our individual worlds and how we built them up through our experiences that we are able to make changes to our behaviour and beliefs.
- Neuro refers to Neurology, how mind and body are linked through the nervous system. It includes an understanding of how an individual has stored their memories -and how coded through their 5 senses – and the effect of imagination.
- Linguisitic refers to how we influence ourselves and others through language and more complex patterns of communication. It looks at the power of beliefs and identity to influence our behaviour, and how language can be utilised to make changes.
- Programming is defined as repeated patterns of thought and behaviour: how we act to reach our goals. So much of our behaviour runs in unconscious patterns that we are not aware of them. This is fine if this is working constructively for us, but stressful if it isn’t. Once brought to our conscious attention, the patterns and beliefs that support them can be adjusted and new behaviours result.
After using Action Learning approaches :
”….It was not until working through the well formed outcome criteria that I discovered why my goal was important to me and how important it was. It has been an emotional roller coaster writing this assignment, but it has had a fundamental effect on me….. It is now up to me to achieve my goal which I will do. Thank you Liz….”
